Lauren received the most beautiful gift, a new heart and kidney just in time for her birthday. TALK ABOUT A GIFT!!!
This past week is turning into a blur for me. So much has happened. Where do I start? On Monday the doctors thought Lauren would be able to tolerate breathing on her own. So they removed the breathing tube. At first, she was doing great, breathing was good, so everyone was excited. I just kept thinking "Oh my God, this just took months off the recovery process". During the night, Lauren's breathing became very shallow, with all the med she had in her she was to relaxed and wasn't letting out the carbon dioxide. Eventually early Tuesday morning, they had no choice but to place the breathing tube back in. She just wasn't ready. She had some swelling in her throat, plus she was still very weak. Then Lauren began hallucinating, that was scary. At one point she would not stop looking at the ceiling, just kept staring at it. Not really responding to us, little bit here and there. With all the sedation she had in her along with pain medication she was out of it. Last night they lifted all sedation and is now only on pain medication. The plan for Lauren at this time is... to leave the breathing tube in until Monday. Then Monday try again to remove the breathing tube. Today Lauren went for a cat scan on her throat, they are taking every precaution for success. Lauren surgeon wants to follow Lauren's wishes of no trac the best he can. So between now and then Lauren needs to get stronger to make it happen. We have physical therapy coming in every day to work with her. For her birthday today, the nurses gave her a mini spa day morning, even washed her hair, which she loved. She is comfortable now and in a good place. The doctors are very happy with her numbers for the new heart and kidney. Best news ever. No problems there. I hate to ask, but we could still use the prayers, not out of the woods yet. Monday is a big day. My husband Dean has been here with us, which can been great. Ok I have a good one, on Monday she was able to say to me, "You picked out the best father for me, thank you". I just laughed and said "I am so happy you liked my choice".
