Lauren's breathing tube!!!
Last night Lauren's brother's came up to see her for her birthday. Surprised all of us. But that wasn't the big surprise, the doctors decided to take Lauren's breathing tube out. The plan was to take it out next Monday, but all the doctors felt she was ready and came in a and said "happy birthday Lauren, we are going to take that tube out now". We were all shocked, Lauren became very frightened. They assured her, they felt she was in a good place and wanted to move forward.
Lauren did great, blood gasses were coming back great. It was reassuring blood work was coming back good, but we were all so nervous all night long. Lauren refused to go to sleep last night, afraid she would fail and wake up with a trac. So all night, Lauren would keep coughing to bring up some stuff she had in her lungs.
It was a long night. I stayed up, then I would lay down and just watch her. Lauren had a great nurse last night that kept reassuring her she was fine and would do breathing therapy with her to help loosen it all up. She still hasn't slept. Little cat naps here and there. Also she doesn't want to take any type of pain meds if she doesn't really need them. Afraid it might relax her to much that she forgets to breath. I truly believe that she is doing great. Talk about a fighter.
Today we were told if everything keeps moving in the right direction, on Tuesday we could be moved to the step down unit, say GOOD BYE TO ICU!!!
